Painting Apparatus No. 1
(2006)
4’ Steel bar, glass jar and plug
suspended over 2 x 2’ canvas.
These pictures show the “painting apparatus” before and after it has been used. A jar of paint is hung from a steel bar, which is suspended from the ceiling at the balance point. When a plug at the bottom of the jar is removed, the paint pours out and the bar becomes unbalanced. A twist in the string causes the bar to spin as the paint drains. The falling paint traces the pattern of motion on a canvas below. The event ends when the jar is emptied, and the foot of the bar rests on the canvas.
